What It Is

Massage in reverse

Most hands-on treatment works by pressing into muscle. Cupping does the opposite. Cups placed on the skin create gentle suction that lifts the skin and the tissue underneath, decompressing the area rather than compressing it.

That lift encourages blood flow to the area and can ease the feeling of tightness in muscles that have been working hard or held under tension for a long time. It's a popular recovery tool with athletes for exactly that reason, and it pairs well with sports massage and physiotherapy rather than replacing them.

Who It Helps

When cupping earns its place

Cupping tends to suit people dealing with stubborn muscle tightness: backs and shoulders that carry stress, legs mid-training-block, and areas that stay tense no matter how much stretching you do. Many people find it deeply relaxing, and it can reach a sense of release that pressure alone sometimes doesn't.

As with any treatment at the clinic, it won't be used as a gimmick. It will be offered where it genuinely fits your treatment plan, alongside hands-on work and rehab, and I'll tell you honestly if I think something else would serve you better.

What To Expect

Does it hurt, and what about the marks?

Cupping shouldn't hurt. Most people describe a firm pulling sensation that settles into something quite relaxing. The famous circular marks are the visible sign of blood drawn to the surface; they're not bruises from impact, they don't usually hurt, and they typically fade within a few days to a week.

Your session is 45 minutes and combines cupping with sports massage, so the suction work and the hands-on work reinforce each other. If you're not sure whether it suits what you're dealing with, message @d.b_physio on Instagram or ask at your next appointment.
